A global university
With over 750 partnerships in 70 countries, the University of Strasbourg distinguishes itself through its global outlook. For example, it hosts the Maison universitaire France-Japon, a unique establishment in France that testifies to the university’s strong partnerships with Japanese universities. Supported by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, it helps strengthen cooperation between France and Japan in terms of teaching and research.
The university encourages the transition from bilateral cooperation to network-based cooperation. It is a member of numerous international university alliances and networks, such as the League of European Research Universities (LERU), the European University Association (EUA) and the Utrecht Network. These various networks encourage mobility between different institutions, the sharing of knowledge and good practice, and making education and research more international.

The university also leads the Academic Network on Inclusiveness, Multilingualism and Excellence (Anime). Oriented towards tertiary education institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, this network comprises 13 partner universities. One of its objectives is to enable its members to provide joint responses to calls for projects for international programmes.

International academic programmes
In collaboration with its partners, the university offers more than 120 international courses that enable students to obtain a double or even triple degree.
It also offers more than 30 courses abroad at numerous partner institutions. Students take the courses in their country of residence, and these courses are taught by staff from the University of Strasbourg and local partners.

The university encourages making its courses more international. Its International Cooperation Department (Pôle coopération internationale – PCI) and Research Project Development Hub (Pôle unique d'ingénierie – PUI) provide support and advice to collaborative project leads from the various faculties throughout the entire collaborative project process – from proposal submission, review, negotiation and the signing of the contract to the approval, implementation and final assessment of the project.
The university is strengthening its international partnerships through Erasmus+ projects supported by foreign policy funds. These projects facilitate exchanges between tertiary education institutions in Erasmus+ member countries and some non-member countries, such as Morocco, South Africa and Ukraine.

International research
The university was the first university to propose a partnership with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (Centre national de la recherche scientifique – CNRS) to support its initiatives for internationalising research, namely its international research projects (IRP, formerly called LIA) and the international research network (IRN, formerly called GDRI).
The university's laboratories participate in international research projects and work with international partner laboratories. A network of international relations officers for research supports and encourages these partnerships. The university's Research Project Development Hub also supports project leads in their search for regional, national, European and international funding.
The university's international standing enables it to attract researchers from all around the world to its research units. It is committed to providing a supportive environment for researchers and to fostering their professional development. This commitment was rewarded by the human resources management label for researchers "HR Excellence in Research" in 2016 and by the "Bienvenue en France" label in 2019.
